Look, I'm not here to tell you what the "greatest anime ever" is. This isn't some objective ranking based on animation quality or critical acclaim. These are just the shows that stuck with me. The ones I think about randomly. The ones that made me laugh, cry, or just sit there staring at the screen going "wait, that was incredible."

Everyone's got their own list, and this one's mine.

1. Hunter x Hunter

Hunter X Hunter
Hunter X Hunter

This anime ruined me for other shonen. In the best way possible.

Hunter x Hunter doesn't feel like it's trying to be deep or philosophical. It just is. The power system (Nen) actually makes sense and gets more interesting the more you learn about it. Every arc feels like a different genre—tournament arc, then mafia thriller, then psychological horror, then war drama.

And the characters? They grow in ways that feel real. Gon isn't just "getting stronger." He's changing, sometimes for the worse. Killua's entire journey is about figuring out what friendship even means when you were raised as an assassin.

The Chimera Ant arc alone is worth watching the entire series. It's long, yeah, but it earns every single episode.

2. The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)

This show is stupid. And I mean that as the highest compliment.

Cid wants to be the mysterious overpowered guy pulling strings from the shadows. So he makes up this entire fantasy conspiracy in his head... and then it turns out to be real. The whole show is just him accidentally being a genius while thinking he's just playing pretend.

It's self-aware, hilarious, and surprisingly well-animated. Plus, it never takes itself too seriously. Sometimes you just want to watch someone be ridiculously overpowered and look cool doing it.

3. Idaten Jump

Pure nostalgia, no other way to put it.

This was the anime when I was a kid. Kids riding MTB bikes, racing on impossible tracks, rivalries that felt life-or-death even though it was just... bikes. The energy was unmatched. Every race felt like the most important thing in the world.

I'm not saying it's a masterpiece. But it made me obsessed with competition anime, and that love never went away. Sometimes the shows that hit you at the right age just stay with you forever.

4. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo)

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

This anime will make you feel things you didn't sign up for.

On the surface, it's about a guy taking care of a genius artist who can't function in normal life. But really, it's about what happens when you work hard and still can't reach the people around you. When your friends are naturally talented and you're just... not.

It's about jealousy. About feeling left behind. About wondering if your dreams are even realistic. And it doesn't give you easy answers.

If you've ever tried to create something—art, music, writing, anything—and felt like you weren't good enough, this show will hurt. But in a way that feels honest.

5. One Piece

One Piece
One Piece

What's there to say that hasn't been said already?

One Piece is a commitment. Over a thousand episodes. But it's also one of the most rewarding stories ever told. The world-building is insane. The emotional moments hit harder because you've spent so much time with these characters.

Arlong Park. Enies Lobby. Marineford. These arcs stay with you.

Yeah, the pacing can drag. Yeah, some arcs are weaker than others. But when One Piece is firing on all cylinders? Nothing else comes close. It's not just an anime—it's an experience.

6. Horimiya

Horimiya

Sometimes you just want something warm and real.

Horimiya doesn't have crazy plot twists or high stakes. It's just people being people. Falling in love, dealing with insecurity, growing up, figuring themselves out. And somehow, that's enough.

The main couple actually gets together early, which is rare. And then the show just lets you enjoy watching them be together. No misunderstandings. No dragged-out drama. Just two people learning how to be close to someone.

It's one of those anime you can rewatch anytime and feel good.

7. Daily Lives of High School Boys (Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou)

Daily Lives of High School Boys
Daily Lives of High School Boys

This is the funniest anime I've ever watched. Period.

It's just dumb high school guys doing dumb high school things. And somehow, it's painfully accurate. The weird conversations. The stupid dares. The random philosophical debates that go nowhere.

If you went to an all-boys school or just hung out with guy friends during high school, this show will feel weirdly personal. It captures that specific chaotic energy perfectly.

Also, "Highschool Girls Are Funky" is one of the greatest recurring skits ever.

8. Death Note

Death Note
Death Note

The anime that gets anyone hooked.

Even people who don't watch anime have seen Death Note. And for good reason. The mind games between Light and L are genuinely gripping. Every episode ends on a cliffhanger. The tension never lets up.

Yeah, the second half isn't as strong. But those first 25 episodes? Perfect. You can't look away.

It's one of those rare shows that's both smart and entertaining. You're not just watching—you're trying to figure out the next move before the characters do.

9. Naruto

Naruto
Naruto

This is the one that started it all for me.

Naruto isn't perfect. The filler is brutal. The pacing drags. Some plotlines go nowhere. But man, when it hits, it hits.

Naruto vs Sasuke. Jiraiya's death. Might Guy vs Madara. Pain's invasion. These moments are burned into my memory.

It's a show about loneliness, about proving yourself, about never giving up even when the world's against you. And when you grow up with these characters over hundreds of episodes, you can't help but care.

10. Bleach

Bleach
Bleach

Style. That's the word for Bleach.

The soundtrack is incredible. The character designs are iconic. The fights have a weight to them that's hard to describe. And the Soul Society arc is genuinely one of the best arcs in any shonen anime.

Sure, it has pacing issues. The Fullbringer arc exists. But Bleach has an atmosphere that no other anime quite captures. It just feels cool.

And now with the Thousand-Year Blood War arc getting adapted properly, it's reminded everyone why people loved this show in the first place.

Why These Anime Matter to Me

Looking at this list, I notice a pattern. Almost all of these shows have:

  • Characters who actually grow and change
  • Emotional moments that feel earned, not forced
  • Themes about rivalry, friendship, or chasing impossible dreams
  • A mix of hype, humor, and heartbreak

Honorable Mentions (also 10/10)

  • Bakuman.
  • Hajime no Ippo

That's what keeps me coming back to anime. Not flashy animation or crazy plot twists (though those help). Just stories that make you feel something real.
