What Is Solo Leveling’s 27-Year War? Jinwoo’s Missing Battle Explained
Rushabh Bhosale
One of Sung Jinwoo’s biggest battles barely gets shown in the main Solo Leveling story. After the conflict with the Monarchs reaches its devastating conclusion, Jinwoo makes a choice that rewrites the world and sends him into another war, one he fights for 27 years from his own perspective.
That missing period is now becoming much more important. Netmarble’s Solo Leveling: KARMA is built around the 27-year war in the Dimensional Gap, and a new cinematic trailer released around Tokyo Game Show 2026 has again put the unexplored conflict at the center of the franchise.
The short answer is that Jinwoo spends those years hunting the Monarchs after time is reset, trying to prevent the disasters of the previous timeline from ever happening. KARMA is not inventing the existence of that war, but it is filling in events the original story did not depict in detail.
Why does Jinwoo enter the Dimensional Gap?
Jinwoo’s decision only makes sense after understanding what the war against the Monarchs costs Earth. By the end of the original conflict, countless people have died and enormous destruction has already occurred. Winning does not restore those lives.
The Cup of Reincarnation offers another possibility. The artifact can turn back time, creating an earlier point in history before the catastrophe unfolds. Jinwoo chooses that option even though it means the victories, relationships and sacrifices of the previous timeline will effectively disappear for most people.
Instead of waiting for the same invasion to happen again, Jinwoo goes into the Dimensional Gap and takes the war directly to the Monarchs. This is the crucial difference. He is no longer the inexperienced Hunter who slowly grew stronger through the System. He enters the new conflict carrying the power and experience of the Shadow Monarch.
Why does the war last 27 years?
The 27 years refer to Jinwoo’s experience inside the Dimensional Gap. Time does not operate there in the same way it does in the ordinary world. Anime Corner’s coverage of Netmarble’s 2026 material notes that Jinwoo fights for 27 years while only about two years pass in the real world.
That detail explains one of the strangest parts of Jinwoo’s ending. He can wage an extraordinarily long campaign without returning to an Earth that has aged by nearly three decades. For everyone outside the gap, his disappearance is far shorter than the life he experiences in battle.
The number also changes how we should think about Jinwoo himself. His apparent age does not reflect all of his lived experience. By the time he returns, he has endured decades of additional combat against enemies powerful enough to threaten worlds.
What did the original story actually show?
The original Solo Leveling story establishes the war and its outcome, but it does not turn those 27 years into a conventional full-length arc. That is why the period has always felt enormous in lore but comparatively small on the page.
We know the purpose: Jinwoo is eliminating the Monarch threat before it can repeat the destruction of the previous timeline. We know the scale: the campaign consumes decades from his perspective. And we know that Jinwoo ultimately returns after completing his mission.
What the main story does not provide is a detailed account of every battle, location, setback and encounter during those decades. That blank space is exactly where KARMA operates.
What Solo Leveling: KARMA adds to the 27-year war
Netmarble describes KARMA as an untold tale from a 27-year gap and says its original storyline takes place in the Dimensional Gap. The Broken Cup of Reincarnation is central to the game, with Jinwoo’s fragmented memories tied to restoring it.
The September cinematic material pushes the conflict further. Its official description says Jinwoo’s lonely fight continues inside the Dimensional Gap and introduces Hunters corrupted by an unnatural power, while teasing a hidden force controlling them. Earlier 2026 material also introduced new characters and enemies created specifically for this unexplored storyline.
This distinction matters for canon discussions. The 27-year war itself comes from Solo Leveling’s established story. KARMA is expanding the largely unseen events within that period with an original game narrative. Fans should not assume every new character or incident introduced by the game was previously present in the novel, manhwa or anime.
How the war connects to the Monarchs
The Monarchs are not simply another group of dungeon bosses. They are central participants in the larger cosmic conflict behind Solo Leveling, which is why removing them before Earth becomes a battlefield can change history so dramatically.
Jinwoo’s relationship to them is also unusual because he inherits the power of Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch. That puts him inside the same supernatural hierarchy while leaving him fundamentally opposed to the Monarchs who intend to devastate the human world. Our separate guide to the Solo Leveling Monarchs explains that wider conflict and the roles of the major Monarchs in more detail.
Why the 27-year war matters to Jinwoo’s character
The war is easy to reduce to another example of Jinwoo becoming overwhelmingly powerful, but its real importance is the burden he accepts. He chooses a victory that almost nobody will remember.
That is a major shift from the early Jinwoo who entered dangerous dungeons because he needed money and wanted to support his family. By the end, he is willing to spend decades fighting in isolation so that other people can live ordinary lives without knowing what he prevented.
It also completes the purpose behind his extraordinary growth. The System prepares Jinwoo to inherit the Shadow Monarch’s power, but the 27-year conflict shows what he ultimately chooses to do with that power once the training mechanism is no longer the center of his life.
Is Solo Leveling: KARMA the anime’s Season 3?
No. This is especially important because current searches around Solo Leveling can easily mix the projects together. KARMA is a roguelite action RPG developed by Netmarble Neo, not Solo Leveling Season 3.
Netmarble’s official materials list the game for 2026, and current reporting identifies PC, iOS and Android as its platforms. As of September 17, 2026, there is still no exact launch date in the sources checked for this article.
The missing Solo Leveling arc is finally getting room to breathe
The 27-year war has always been one of the most consequential gaps in Sung Jinwoo’s life. It explains how he prevents the previous catastrophe from repeating, adds decades of unseen experience to his character and turns the ending from a simple reset into a personal sacrifice.
KARMA now has an unusual opportunity: instead of adapting another familiar dungeon or retelling Jinwoo’s rise, it can explore a period the original narrative deliberately left open. The new Tokyo Game Show-era trailer suggests Netmarble intends to use that space for more than a string of boss fights, with corrupted Hunters, new mysteries and Jinwoo’s memories becoming part of the conflict.
For anime-only viewers, much of this material lies beyond what the television adaptation has covered, so it should be treated as future-story context. For readers who already know Jinwoo’s ending, however, the 27-year war is one of the clearest examples of how much Solo Leveling lore still exists between the major events shown on the page.
