How did Maomao become a poison taster?

Maomao enters the rear palace as a servant after being kidnapped and sold into service. She initially tries to remain anonymous, but her medical knowledge exposes how capable she really is. After her intervention in the illnesses affecting the emperor's children, Jinshi recognizes her usefulness and she eventually serves Consort Gyokuyo as a lady-in-waiting and food taster.

It is an unusually appropriate job for her. A poison taster needs to notice suspicious tastes, smells, ingredients and symptoms quickly. Maomao combines those observational skills with knowledge that most palace servants do not possess.

Her resistance gives her an additional margin for error, but her real advantage is expertise. The palace values Maomao because she can investigate why something is dangerous rather than merely confirming that a dish tastes wrong.
