How to choose a watch order

Big franchises rarely stay one tidy series. Over the years they add sequels, prequel movies, OVAs and recap specials, and the titles don’t always say where each one belongs. This guide puts every entry on one timeline so you can see what comes next and how long the rest will take.

Release order

Every franchise page starts with release order: each entry sorted by its original premiere date. It is the order audiences first watched the story in, so twists and character introductions land as intended.

Chronological and beginner orders

Some series tell their story out of sequence, and for some a newcomer-friendly route makes sense. These orders are editorial calls, so we publish one only after an editor verifies it against official or well-documented sources. You’ll find them on the franchise page when they’re available.

Main story, side stories and recaps

Entries are labelled using MyAnimeList’s relation data. Main story entries are joined by sequel and prequel links. Side stories branch off them, and recaps summarise episodes you’ve already seen. Use “Main story only” for the shortest route.

Frequently asked questions

Should I watch anime in release order or chronological order?

For a first watch, release order is usually the safest choice. It is the order the creators intended audiences to discover the story, reveals land as planned, and later entries assume you have seen earlier ones. Chronological order can be fun on a rewatch.

How is the release order worked out?

Every entry linked to a franchise on MyAnimeList as a sequel, prequel, side story or summary is collected, then sorted by its original premiere date. Movies, OVAs and specials appear where they were first released.

What do “side story” and “recap” mean?

They follow MyAnimeList’s relation labels. Side stories branch off the main storyline; recaps summarise episodes you have already seen. Turn on “Main story only” to hide both.

Why don’t all franchises have a chronological or beginner order?

Those orders are editorial choices. AnimeSparks only publishes one after an editor has checked it against cited sources, so some franchises show release order only for now.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, in this browser only. Tick an entry as watched and your progress and remaining time stay on this device.
