What Are Authorities in Re:Zero? Witch Factors Explained

Authorities are some of Re:Zero’s most dangerous powers, but they are not ordinary magic. Here is how Witch Factors, Sin Archbishops and Subaru’s abilities fit together without going beyond the anime.

Authorities are some of the strangest powers in Re:Zero because they do not behave like ordinary magic. They are supernatural abilities connected to Witch Factors and the sins represented by the Witches and Sin Archbishops. That is why powers such as Petelgeuse’s Unseen Hand, Regulus Corneas’s seemingly impossible defense and Subaru’s Invisible Providence can feel as though they are breaking the rules of the world rather than simply using stronger spells.

The easiest way to understand the system is to separate three ideas: magic is a learnable system that uses mana, Divine Protections are blessings with their own rules, and Authorities come from Witch Factors. An Authority can resemble magic from the outside, but its mechanism and conditions are fundamentally different. Re:Zero deliberately keeps parts of the system mysterious, so this explanation sticks to what the anime has established through Season 4 and avoids later light-novel revelations.

What exactly is an Authority in Re:Zero?

An Authority is a unique ability manifested through a Witch Factor. The name matters because these powers are not standardized techniques. Two people associated with the same sin do not necessarily express that power in exactly the same way, and the ability often reflects something about the holder’s nature, desires or compatibility with the factor.

That helps explain why Authorities can look wildly unrelated. Sloth can manifest as the invisible hands used by Petelgeuse and later as Subaru’s much more limited Invisible Providence. Greed produces Regulus’s extraordinary abilities, while Subaru eventually manifests a very different Greed-related power. The shared sin does not mean every holder receives an identical move set.

What is a Witch Factor?

A Witch Factor is the mysterious source that allows an Authority to manifest. Re:Zero associates these factors with the deadly sins and with figures such as the Witches of Sin and the Witch Cult’s Sin Archbishops. The anime does not present them as ordinary magical items that anyone can simply equip. Compatibility matters, and taking in a factor can have profound consequences.

Subaru provides the clearest viewer-facing example. After Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti is defeated, the Sloth Witch Factor passes to Subaru. He does not immediately become another Petelgeuse. Instead, the factor eventually manifests for him as Invisible Providence, an unseen force that resembles Petelgeuse’s hands but is far less overwhelming and is painful for Subaru to use.

Are Authorities the same as magic?

No. Re:Zero’s ordinary magic is built around mana, gates and elemental affinities. Characters can learn techniques, improve their control and operate within a recognizable magical framework. Authorities are much less predictable. Their effects can impose unusual conditions on people, bodies, perception, space or other parts of reality without behaving like a conventional spell.

This is why fighting a Sin Archbishop is often an information problem before it becomes a strength problem. A powerful swordsman can still lose if the opponent’s Authority has a rule nobody understands. Subaru’s greatest advantage in these battles is frequently not raw combat ability but his willingness to investigate the hidden condition behind an apparently impossible power.

How do the Sin Archbishops use Authorities?

The Witch Cult’s Sin Archbishops are the clearest group of Authority users encountered throughout the anime. Their titles correspond to sins, but their abilities are highly individual. Petelgeuse, the Archbishop of Sloth, attacks with invisible hands. Regulus, the Archbishop of Greed, appears almost untouchable until the rules supporting his ability are understood. Other Archbishops demonstrate equally abnormal powers tied to identity, memory, emotion and perception.

This makes the Witch Cult more dangerous than a group of strong mages. Each Archbishop can effectively introduce a new rule to a battle. Learning that rule is often the difference between an enemy seeming invincible and becoming beatable. For more context on how the group is organized, AnimeSparks’ Witch Cult and Sin Archbishops explainer covers the cult separately from the power system itself.

What Authority does Subaru have?

Subaru’s clearest Authority in the earlier anime is Invisible Providence, which comes from the Sloth Witch Factor. It allows him to produce an invisible force resembling a hand. Compared with Petelgeuse’s enormous number of Unseen Hands, Subaru’s version is limited and physically punishing. That contrast is important: possessing the same Witch Factor does not mean Subaru inherits Petelgeuse’s exact performance or mastery.

Later, after the conflict with Regulus, Subaru carries the Greed Witch Factor and manifests Cor Leonis. Rather than reproducing Regulus’s self-centered invulnerability, Subaru’s Greed-related ability is built around his relationship with allies. In the anime, it lets him perceive companions he recognizes as allies and redistribute burdens under specific conditions. The difference is one of the best demonstrations that an Authority reflects its holder rather than functioning like a fixed spell copied from the previous user.

Is Return by Death an Authority?

Return by Death clearly belongs to the supernatural mystery surrounding Subaru and the Witch of Envy, but anime-only viewers should be careful with overly neat labels. The series has established that Subaru dies, returns to an earlier save point, remembers discarded timelines and is prevented from freely explaining the ability. It has also repeatedly connected him to Satella and the Witch’s miasma.

What the anime has not done is reduce every unanswered detail about Return by Death to a simple technical diagram. Its precise origin, why Subaru has it and the full nature of his connection to Satella remain part of the larger mystery. It is therefore safer to describe Return by Death as an Authority-like power tied to the Witch of Envy while separating confirmed mechanics from later source-material explanations and fan theories.

Why does Subaru smell like the Witch if Authorities come from Witch Factors?

Subaru’s Witch’s Scent is related to the same broader supernatural territory, but the scent should not be treated as simply another name for an Authority. Characters such as Rem and Beatrice can detect witch-associated miasma around Subaru, and it becomes especially noticeable around Return by Death and the taboo preventing him from revealing it.

That distinction matters because Subaru carries several overlapping mysteries. He can possess Witch Factors, manifest Authorities and carry the Witch’s Scent while also having Return by Death. Those concepts are connected, but collapsing them into one power would make Re:Zero’s system less accurate, not simpler. AnimeSparks’ separate Witch’s Scent explainer goes deeper into why Rem initially finds Subaru so suspicious.

Can someone have more than one Witch Factor?

Subaru proves that one person can carry more than one factor. By the events adapted in the anime, his experiences connect him directly with both Sloth and Greed. That makes him unusual even in a world already filled with Divine Protections, spirits, curses and powerful magic users.

It also changes how viewers should think about Subaru’s growth. He does not progress like a conventional fantasy protagonist who simply gains larger attacks. His most important abilities come with restrictions, pain, responsibility and information requirements. Authorities expand what he can do, but they do not remove the need to understand people and solve the conditions behind each crisis.

Are Authorities stronger than Divine Protections?

There is no useful universal ranking where every Authority automatically defeats every Divine Protection. They are different systems. Divine Protections can grant extraordinary advantages, while Authorities can operate through bizarre conditions that conventional power may not answer directly. A matchup depends on what the specific abilities do and whether their rules are understood.

Reinhard is a good reminder that Re:Zero does not reduce every confrontation to one power category. The series mixes martial skill, magic, spirits, blessings, curses, Witch Factors and Authorities. The result is a setting where knowing the mechanism of an ability can matter as much as knowing who appears stronger on paper.

Why Authorities matter so much in Re:Zero

Authorities turn Re:Zero’s major battles into mysteries. Petelgeuse is terrifying before Subaru understands what he is seeing. Regulus seems impossible to damage until his conditions are uncovered. Subaru’s own powers are useful only when he accepts their limits and works with other people. The system rewards interpretation rather than simple escalation.

That is especially relevant while Season 4 keeps Re:Zero near the top of current anime discussion. The season has pushed Subaru deeper into problems involving identity, memory and the consequences of Witch Cult powers, while the Recapture Arc continues the story beyond the first cour. Anime Corner’s Week 11 Summer 2026 poll placed Re:Zero Season 4 fifth overall, showing that the franchise remains one of the season’s most visible series.

The short version is this: Witch Factors are the mysterious sources, and Authorities are the abnormal powers they can produce. They are separate from ordinary magic, they can manifest differently depending on the holder, and Subaru can carry more than one. Understanding that distinction makes many of Re:Zero’s strangest fights, and Subaru’s unusual progression, much easier to follow without spoiling the mysteries the anime has not answered yet.
