What Is the Witch Cult in Re:Zero? Sin Archbishops Explained

The Witch Cult in Re:Zero is a loose, violent religious movement associated with the Witch of Envy, Satella. Its most dangerous members are the Sin Archbishops, individuals who possess supernatural Authorities tied to Witch Factors and named after deadly sins. The important distinction is that the cult is not a disciplined army with one simple chain of command. Its Archbishops have different motives, personalities and interpretations of devotion, which is one reason their actions can seem chaotic even when they are pursuing the same broad obsession.
For Subaru, the Witch Cult becomes especially dangerous because his own connection to the Witch of Envy is inseparable from Return by Death. His ability helps him survive encounters that should be impossible, but it also places him unusually close to the same supernatural system that empowers several of his enemies.
What exactly is the Witch Cult?
The anime first presents the Witch Cult as a terrifying extremist group whose members worship the Witch of Envy. Ordinary cultists can operate in groups, hide among civilians and participate in coordinated attacks, but the organization’s identity is defined by the Sin Archbishops above them. These are not merely senior officers. Each Archbishop can possess an Authority capable of ignoring or rewriting the normal rules of combat.
That structure makes the Witch Cult difficult to understand if you expect a conventional villain organization. An Archbishop may cooperate with followers when useful while still behaving according to a deeply personal obsession. Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti’s idea of diligence, Regulus Corneas’s fixation on his rights and the other Archbishops’ sin-based identities are not interchangeable beliefs. Their shared labels connect them, but they remain dangerously individual.
Who are the Sin Archbishops?
Sin Archbishops are the Witch Cult’s highest-profile figures, with positions associated with sins such as Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath and Lust. Re:Zero deliberately introduces them over time rather than explaining the entire hierarchy at once. By Season 3, the anime has brought several Archbishops into direct conflict with Subaru and the Royal Selection camps, turning what once looked like Petelgeuse’s isolated fanaticism into a much larger threat.

The title does not mean every Archbishop has the same type of power. Their abilities differ radically because an Authority reflects the Witch Factor and its holder. This is why learning an Archbishop’s title gives Subaru only part of the information he needs. Understanding the rule behind an Authority is often more important than matching it with raw strength.
What are Witch Factors?
Witch Factors are mysterious supernatural factors associated with the sins and the Authorities used by compatible holders. They are separate from ordinary magic. A person does not simply study harder and learn an Authority in the way a mage develops a spell. Possessing a Witch Factor can grant an Authority whose form depends on the individual who carries it.
This distinction matters because Re:Zero’s magic system already contains mana, elemental affinities, spirits, divine protections and other supernatural mechanisms. Authorities sit outside many of those expectations. They can produce effects that initially seem unfair precisely because their rules are not the familiar rules of spellcasting.
What is an Authority in Re:Zero?
An Authority is the extraordinary ability manifested through a Witch Factor. Petelgeuse’s Unseen Hands are an early example of why these powers are so difficult to fight. The danger is not simply their destructive output. Opponents frequently need to discover what an Authority does, what conditions govern it and whether there is a loophole before they can build an effective counter.
That turns many Witch Cult battles into information problems. Subaru’s greatest advantage is rarely that he can overpower an Archbishop. He can observe a seemingly impossible ability, fail, retain information across a reset and approach the next loop with a better understanding of the enemy. Re:Zero therefore makes the mystery of an Authority part of the fight itself.
Does the Witch Cult actually serve Satella?
The cult is associated with devotion to the Witch of Envy, but Re:Zero intentionally complicates what that devotion means. The actions and beliefs of individual cult members should not automatically be treated as direct instructions from Satella. The story repeatedly separates what characters believe about the Witch from what viewers can actually confirm about her motives.
That is particularly important when interpreting Subaru. His Witch’s scent, Return by Death and unusual relationship with Satella create suspicion around him, but sharing a supernatural connection does not make Subaru a Witch Cult member. Re:Zero uses those similarities to create ambiguity without making the factions equivalent.
Why does Subaru smell like the Witch?
Certain characters and creatures can detect the Witch’s scent, or miasma, around Subaru. The anime connects that presence to his Return by Death and shows that the scent can become more noticeable after he uses the ability. To people with traumatic experience of the Witch Cult, that makes Subaru look suspicious even when he is trying to help.
The scent is therefore both lore and a practical storytelling device. It links Subaru to the series’ central mystery while damaging his ability to earn trust. It also helps explain why his encounters with people such as Rem become so dangerous before they understand who he actually is.
Why the Witch Cult matters beyond Petelgeuse
Petelgeuse is the first Sin Archbishop to dominate Subaru’s story, so it is easy to initially view the cult through him. Later arcs make clear that he represents only one part of the problem. Different Archbishops bring different Authorities, histories and objectives, while the existence of Witch Factors ties their powers to mysteries much older than Subaru’s arrival in Lugunica.
Season 3 makes that expansion especially visible by putting multiple Sin Archbishops at the center of the conflict in Priestella. Crunchyroll’s official pre-release coverage highlighted the Sin Archbishops as a major part of the season’s cast and threat. The result is a clearer picture of the Witch Cult as a recurring system of antagonists rather than one villain’s personal following.
How the Witch Cult connects to Re:Zero Season 4
The cult’s importance does not disappear when one Archbishop is defeated. Re:Zero Season 4 continues a story in which Subaru’s knowledge of Witch Factors, Authorities and the consequences of earlier conflicts matters increasingly often. As of September 9, 2026, Season 4 is currently airing, so anime-only viewers should be cautious with searches for individual Archbishop powers because later light-novel material can reveal major twists.
The simplest way to understand the Witch Cult
Think of the Witch Cult as a dangerous network built around the mythology of the Witch of Envy, with Sin Archbishops serving as its most powerful faces. Witch Factors are the supernatural source connected to their sin-based powers, while Authorities are the unique abilities those Factors can manifest in their holders.
The reason the cult remains frightening is that knowing an Archbishop’s sin does not tell you how to beat them. Their powers can operate by unfamiliar rules, their personalities make cooperation unpredictable, and their relationship with Satella is more complicated than simple obedience. For Subaru, defeating them means solving those rules while surviving long enough to use the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Subaru a member of the Witch Cult?
No. Subaru has a supernatural connection to the Witch of Envy and carries the Witch’s scent, but he is not a member of the Witch Cult.
Are Sin Archbishops stronger than the Witches?
Re:Zero does not support a simple universal ranking. Sin Archbishops and Witches possess different Authorities, and compatibility, conditions and individual abilities matter greatly.
Are Authorities the same as magic?
No. Authorities are connected to Witch Factors and operate separately from the ordinary magic system, which is why their effects can break expectations established by normal spellcasting.
