After she saves Lady Gyokuyou's daughter, Jinshi recognizes her ability and pulls her into a far more visible role as a food taster. That basic progression explains the central irony of her character: every time Maomao proves how capable she is, she becomes harder to ignore.

Maomao Does Not Actually Believe She Is Ordinary

The first misconception to clear up is that Maomao is not pretending because she thinks she lacks intelligence.

She knows she has specialized knowledge. She understands medicine, poison, the human body and the practical details other people overlook. More importantly, she knows how dangerous knowledge can be when it reveals something a powerful person would rather keep hidden.

What Maomao avoids is not competence. She avoids attention.

That distinction is essential to understanding her.

Being Unremarkable Is a Survival Strategy

The rear palace is beautiful on the surface, but it is also a hierarchy built around status, favor, family connections and proximity to political power. They help make her appear plainer and less conspicuous. Naganuma specifically noted that the production adjusted her skin brightness and hair contrast between those appearances.

This establishes one of the series' funniest and most important patterns:

• Maomao notices something everyone else missed.
• Her curiosity or conscience makes ignoring it impossible.
• She solves the problem.
• Someone realizes how useful she is.
• Her quiet life becomes even less achievable.

Her greatest obstacle to remaining ordinary is Maomao herself.

Jinshi Sees Through the Version of Maomao She Presents

His interest is inseparable from the larger court secret behind Jinshi’s true identity.

Jinshi is particularly dangerous to Maomao's strategy because he notices precisely what she would prefer powerful people not to notice.

He recognizes that she is unusually observant. Once that happens, her attempts at anonymity become increasingly ineffective.

Yet their relationship is more interesting than a simple conflict between someone hiding and someone exposing her. Jinshi keeps presenting situations that require Maomao's abilities, while Maomao repeatedly demonstrates that she cannot fully suppress her curiosity.

The result is a relationship built partly around recognition. Jinshi sees potential where Maomao would prefer to advertise ordinariness.

Why Maomao's Ordinary Act Makes Her Such a Great Heroine

Many intelligent protagonists want everyone around them to recognize how exceptional they are. Maomao is compelling because recognition often looks like trouble to her.

Her intelligence is practical rather than performative. She does not need to win every conversation. She does not need admiration for solving a mystery. Frequently, she would prefer that the people around her never realized she solved it at all.

That makes the moments when she does reveal herself more satisfying. The audience understands that Maomao is not showing off. Something has become interesting, dangerous or morally important enough that remaining silent is no longer possible.

Her ordinariness is therefore one of the cleverest deceptions in The Apothecary Diaries.

Maomao pretends to be ordinary because being underestimated gives her room to observe, survive and preserve as much independence as possible. Her upbringing taught her that beauty and talent attract attention, and the palace teaches her that attention from powerful people creates obligations. The freckles, the restraint and the deliberate low profile are different expressions of the same instinct: control what others are allowed to see.

The irony is that Maomao is simply too curious, too capable and too useful to remain invisible for long. Every mystery she solves exposes another piece of the person she is trying so hard not to advertise.
