Chakra and jutsu

Chakra is the energy ninja use for techniques, mixing physical and spiritual energy. Techniques are grouped into ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu.

How it works

  • Many techniques are performed with hand seals and need a matching chakra nature.
  • Genjutsu trick the target’s senses, and can be countered by disrupting the chakra flow.

Limits

  • A ninja’s chakra reserves are finite and each technique has its own cost.

Introduced: Ep. 1 · ch. 1

Sharingan and Mangekyō

The Uchiha clan’s eye technique. It lets the user read and copy techniques, and the Mangekyō form unlocks stronger, individual abilities at the price of the user’s eyesight.

How it works

  • The Mangekyō is awakened after an intense emotional trauma, usually the loss of someone close.
  • Each Mangekyō user has their own set of abilities.

Limits

  • Heavy use of the Mangekyō damages the eyes over time.

Introduced: Land of Waves arc (episodes 1–19)
