Chainsaw Man’s devils normally have one major advantage over humans: death is not necessarily the end. A devil killed on Earth can return through Hell, and the cycle can continue. Pochita is terrifying because he can break that rule. When the true Chainsaw Devil consumes certain devils, their names and even the concepts they represent can be erased from the world.

That is the core answer to why devils fear Chainsaw Man. His reputation is not simply based on being an exceptionally violent fighter. For a devil, losing to Pochita can mean something much worse than dying: being removed from existence so completely that humanity may no longer remember what was lost.

Why Do Devils Fear Chainsaw Man?

Most devils become dangerous because the human fear attached to their name makes them stronger. Chainsaw Man occupies a stranger position. Pochita is feared by devils themselves, and his legend in Hell comes from repeatedly fighting them and possessing a power that threatens their continued existence.

Ordinary defeat does not permanently solve the problem of a devil. The series establishes a cycle between Earth and Hell: when devils die in one realm, they can reincarnate in the other, usually without retaining clear memories of their previous life. Pochita’s consumption ability can bypass that cycle. A devil he erases does not simply wait for another reincarnation.

This changes the meaning of a fight with Chainsaw Man. Other powerful devils can destroy a body. Pochita can threaten the idea behind that body.

Pochita’s Erasure Power Explained

The most unusual ability associated with the Chainsaw Devil is conceptual erasure. Later in the manga, Makima explains that names once existed for things that humanity no longer remembers because Chainsaw Man ate the corresponding devils. The implication is enormous: consuming a devil can alter the world’s history and collective memory rather than merely remove an enemy from the battlefield.

The ability also explains why control over Chainsaw Man becomes such an important objective. A character who could decide what Pochita eats would potentially possess a way to remove feared realities from the world. That sounds benevolent when the target is something terrible, but it is also an extraordinary form of power over reality itself.

It is important not to overstate what canon has explained. The manga demonstrates what Chainsaw Man’s consumption can do, but it has not provided a simple mechanical origin for why the Chainsaw Devil, specifically, has this ability. Theories connecting chainsaws to birth, forgetting, destruction or other symbolic ideas remain theories unless the story confirms them.

What Happens When a Normal Devil Dies?

Understanding Pochita requires separating erasure from the series’ normal rules. Devils are manifestations of feared concepts, and humans can form devil contracts that exchange something of value for a devil’s power. Death, however, usually feeds into the Earth-Hell reincarnation cycle rather than deleting the devil’s underlying concept.

That is why Pochita represents a uniquely existential threat. A devil may be willing to risk death because death is part of its world. Erasure removes the safety net.

Why Is Pochita Called the Hero of Hell?

Pochita’s full form is associated with the title Hero of Hell. The name is deliberately ironic. He is not a conventional superhero who protects everyone around him. The manga describes a terrifying figure who appears when called, kills devils with overwhelming force and repeatedly returns to battle even after being defeated.

That reputation helps explain the strange mixture of admiration and terror surrounding Chainsaw Man. Some devils revere him. Others desperately want him dead. Powerful factions want to use him. All of those reactions make sense once his ability is understood: Pochita is simultaneously a warrior, a possible weapon and a threat to the metaphysical rules devils depend on.

Is Denji as Powerful as the True Chainsaw Devil?

Not in the same way. Denji becomes Chainsaw Man because Pochita forms a contract with him and replaces his heart. Official VIZ and anime material describe Denji’s resurrection through his contract with the Chainsaw Devil. The familiar hybrid form with chainsaws emerging from Denji’s head and arms is therefore connected to Pochita, but it should not automatically be treated as identical to Pochita fighting at full power.

This distinction matters because characters in the story sometimes react not merely to Denji the teenager, but to the legendary Chainsaw Man attached to the heart inside him. Denji’s personal fighting style, motivations and limitations are his own. The deeper fear surrounding his heart comes from Pochita’s history.

Why Powerful Devils Want Chainsaw Man’s Heart

Denji’s heart is valuable because it is Pochita. That turns an otherwise impoverished teenage devil hunter into the center of conflicts far larger than he initially understands. The official anime has continued this idea beyond the Reze story: the Assassins Arc announcement explicitly frames the next conflict around assassins targeting Denji.

The manga eventually ties that struggle to some of its most important devils, including the Four Horsemen. Their interest in Chainsaw Man is another sign that Pochita is not simply a stronger-than-average devil. His existence can affect the balance between fears, devils and the human world.

Why Does Pochita Look Like a Small Dog?

One of Chainsaw Man’s best contrasts is that the creature with this terrifying reputation first appears as Denji’s small orange companion. The story later makes clear that this is not the only form Pochita can take. His weakened appearance hides what he once was in Hell.

The contrast is also important emotionally. Denji does not initially know Pochita as a cosmic weapon. He knows him as his closest companion. Their relationship is built around survival, shared loneliness and a simple contract: Pochita wants to see Denji pursue his dreams. That personal bond is what separates Denji’s connection to Chainsaw Man from characters who see Pochita primarily as something to control.

Does Chainsaw Man Erase Everything He Eats?

No. The manga does not establish a rule that anything Denji casually eats disappears from reality. The erasure phenomenon is specifically associated with Chainsaw Man consuming devils, and the story has explored variations in how completely an erased concept can disappear. Treating every act of eating as reality manipulation would go beyond what the series shows.

That limitation is useful because it keeps Pochita’s ability strange without making every scene involving food a metaphysical event. Chainsaw Man often uses absurd comedy around eating, but the erasure power has a specific narrative weight when devils and their names are involved.

The Real Reason Pochita Is So Dangerous

Pochita is frightening because Chainsaw Man changes the stakes of death. A powerful devil can kill another devil. The Chainsaw Devil can potentially make that devil’s name and concept cease to exist. In a world where fear creates supernatural beings and death normally leads to reincarnation, that is an ability capable of changing the structure of reality itself.

The mystery that remains is just as important as the answer. Chainsaw Man has explained why devils fear Pochita, but not fully why a devil associated with chainsaws possesses conceptual erasure in the first place. Until Tatsuki Fujimoto gives that power a definitive origin, the safest reading is also the most interesting one: Pochita’s ability is canon, while the reason behind it remains one of the series’ biggest unanswered questions.
