Satoru Gojo’s biography

Who he is

Gojo teaches at Tokyo Jujutsu High and is introduced as the one person capable of protecting the school’s students from the jujutsu establishment. He comes from the Gojo clan, one of the three great families of sorcerers, and was born with Six Eyes, a trait that lets him see cursed energy with extreme precision, together with the clan’s Limitless technique. The pairing had not appeared in the clan for centuries, and it is the reason his name is spoken with a mixture of awe and fear.

Taking in Yuji

When Yuji Itadori swallows a finger of Ryomen Sukuna to save Megumi Fushiguro, the sorcerer society orders his execution. Gojo is the one who arrives in chapter 2, tests Yuji by letting Sukuna surface for ten seconds, and argues that Yuji should be kept alive until all twenty fingers can be collected. He becomes Yuji’s teacher, Megumi’s guardian and the person who sets the pace of the early arcs. (Ep. 1 · ch. 2)

Spoiler: Gojo and Geto in 2006Season 2 (episodes 25–47)

Gojo and Geto in 2006

Season 2 opens with a flashback to the summer of 2006, when Gojo and Suguru Geto were students and the strongest pair at the school. They are assigned to guard Riko Amanai, a girl chosen to merge with the Star Plasma Vessel, and the mission ends with Gojo meeting Toji Fushiguro, an assassin with no cursed energy of his own. Toji wounds Gojo badly enough that Gojo learns reverse cursed technique to survive, and he returns to kill Toji with Hollow Purple. The arc also shows the start of the rift with Geto that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 later resolves. (Ep. 25 · ch. 65)

Spoiler: ShibuyaSeason 2 (episodes 25–47)

Shibuya

On 31 October 2018, Gojo enters the curtain over Shibuya Station to rescue hostages. Inside, he fights a group of special-grade curses and defeats Hanami before Kenjaku, wearing Geto’s body, seals him inside the Prison Realm, a cube that traps its victim in a pocket dimension. The sealing is the series’ largest turning point so far, and everything from the Culling Game onward happens in a world without Gojo. (Ep. 33 · ch. 90)

Spoiler: Sealed during the Culling GameSeason 3 (episodes 48–59)

Sealed during the Culling Game

Season 3 (the first half of the Culling Game) ends with Gojo still sealed. In the manga he stays in the Prison Realm for about 130 more chapters, and the effort to release him becomes one of the story’s goals.

Spoiler: Return and the fight with SukunaManga chapters 221–236

Return and the fight with Sukuna

Gojo is unsealed in chapter 221 and confronts Kenjaku. On 24 December 2018 he faces Sukuna in Shinjuku, a duel the manga gives about fourteen chapters, from the opening Hollow Purple at 200 percent output in chapter 223 to the end of the fight in chapter 236. It is the longest single battle of the series and the one that makes his abilities concrete: it uses domain clashes, forced restoration of burnt-out techniques and the first Black Flash he lands. (Ch. 223)

Spoiler: Death, and what the story does with itManga chapters 221–236

Death, and what the story does with it

Sukuna adapts the world-cutting slash to cut through Infinity, and Gojo is killed at the end of chapter 236. He talks with Geto and his late friends in an afterlife scene, and he does not come back to life. The aftermath is a wartime effort to work around his absence: his body is carried off the battlefield, and later Yuta Okkotsu uses Kenjaku’s technique to fight inside Gojo’s body. His death is a deliberate break in the story, because it forces Yuji and his classmates to finish the fight by themselves. (Ch. 236)

Personality, motivations and development

Playful with students, merciless with the establishment

Gojo jokes, wears a blindfold or sunglasses and hands out souvenirs. Beneath that he is sharply critical of the sorcerer executives, whom he treats with open contempt, and blunt with enemies. The playfulness and the harshness are two sides of the same attitude: he believes strength should protect people who can’t protect themselves, and he has no patience for institutions that use that strength for their own safety.

Spoiler: Overconfidence, and what it costsSeason 2 (episodes 25–47)

Overconfidence, and what it costs

He is certain of his own strength and rarely hides it, and the story is clear about the cost. His early habit of judging people by how strong they are is a trait that Toji’s attack in 2006 and Geto’s defection both punish. Gojo’s later teaching style, including the training that pushes the first-years toward independence, is a response to those lessons.

Spoiler: A teacher who wants to be surpassedManga chapters 221–236

A teacher who wants to be surpassed

Just before the Shinjuku fight Gojo tells Yuji that he hopes the next generation will go beyond him. The statement reads less like modesty and more like the goal of his whole career: to leave behind sorcerers who can stand without him. (Ch. 271)

What drives Satoru Gojo

  • Reforming the jujutsu world from within by raising a generation of strong, independent sorcerers.
  • Protecting his students, especially Yuji and Megumi, from the higher-ups.
  • Containing Sukuna by keeping Yuji alive until the last finger is found.
Spoiler: Designed as the mentor who must leave the storyManga chapters 221–236

Designed as the mentor who must leave the story

Gojo is written as the strongest sorcerer alive, which makes him the single most useful character in a fight and the single hardest to keep in a story about growing up. The series solves that problem by removing him twice: once by sealing him (chapter 90) and once permanently (chapter 236). Each removal shifts the story’s weight onto Yuji, Megumi and Nobara. In the anime, the seal arrives roughly two thirds of the way through season 2, so the viewer experiences the same structural choice before the manga’s later chapters are animated. (Ep. 33 · ch. 90)

What the author has said about his physical ability

In a 2022 Weekly Shonen Jump Giga interview, Gege Akutami said Gojo is as skilled in plain hand-to-hand combat as the millennia-old Kenjaku. That detail matters because it separates Gojo’s fighting skill from his technique: the fights in Shibuya and Shinjuku show him winning exchanges with fists and footwork before any technique is spent. (Jump GIGA Autumn 2022 interview)

Abilities and techniques

Six Eyes六眼 (Rikugan)

Innate traitConfirmed

An inherited trait that lets Gojo perceive cursed energy at a very fine resolution, even through a blindfold.

Strengths
  • Sees the structure of other people’s techniques.
  • Cuts cursed-energy waste to almost nothing, which is why he can leave Limitless running continuously.
Limits and weaknesses
  • It does not make him stronger on its own; it makes Limitless usable.
  • Taxing the brain with constant information is managed with reverse cursed technique.
Shown in

Ep. 26 · ch. 69 · part of Cursed energy

Limitless: Infinity無下限呪術 (Mukagen Jujutsu)

TechniqueConfirmed

The Gojo clan’s inherited technique, which manipulates space. Its neutral form, Infinity, makes incoming objects slow down forever as they approach him.

Strengths
  • Passive protection against most physical attacks once programmed to stay on.
  • The basis for Blue, Red and Purple.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Gojo originally had to switch Infinity on by hand, and keeping it active tired him.
  • It is not unbreakable: the manga’s late chapters show how it can be bypassed.
Shown in

Ep. 7 · ch. 14 · part of Cursed energy

How it evolves

In his student years Infinity was manual. By his third year it ran automatically, judging the danger of approaching objects by mass, speed and shape, and a constant stream of reverse cursed technique keeps his brain from burning out.

Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue術式順転「蒼」

TechniqueConfirmed

Limitless pushed to attraction: a point of pull that draws matter toward it.

Strengths
  • Moves and holds targets in place.
  • Becomes a high-damage crushing point at maximum output.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Its strength depends on output, which has to be controlled.
Shown in

Ep. 26 · ch. 69 · part of Cursed energy

Cursed Technique Reversal: Red術式反転「赫」

TechniqueConfirmed

The reverse of Blue, which repels instead of attracting. It needs reverse cursed technique, so Gojo could not use it until his fight with Toji.

Strengths
  • A powerful repulsive blast.
  • Works as a launch for Hollow Purple.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Requires reverse cursed technique, which not every sorcerer can use.
Shown in

Ep. 7 · ch. 14 · part of Cursed energy

Hollow Technique: Purple虚式「茈」

TechniqueConfirmed

Gojo merges Blue and Red into a mass of imaginary matter that erases whatever it passes through.

Strengths
  • One of the most destructive attacks the series shows from a single user.
  • Can be stacked with a chant and hand signs for extra output.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Raising the output with a chant takes extra time.
  • It must be aimed; the technique is not a guaranteed hit.

Reverse cursed technique反転術式

SkillConfirmed

Gojo’s healing and the key that unlocks Red and Purple. He learns it during his first fight with Toji.

Strengths
  • Heals most injuries and restores brain fatigue.
  • Makes Red and Purple possible.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Cannot restore a life that has already ended.
  • Healing costs cursed energy that is no longer available for attacks.

Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void領域展開「無量空処」

DomainConfirmed

A barrier that fills the target’s mind with endless information and halts their thought and movement.

Strengths
  • A guaranteed hit on everyone inside, including a target far above grade.
  • Gojo’s output control lets him activate it for a fraction of a second to cut cost.
Limits and weaknesses
  • A domain with a higher output can overpower it.
  • Casting it burns out the technique for a while.

SkillConfirmed

Gojo’s own first Black Flash is landed on Sukuna in the Shinjuku fight, later used in a run of consecutive hits.

Strengths

Limits and weaknesses
  • Depends on near-perfect timing.

SkillConfirmed

Defences against sure-hit domains. Gojo used them for the first time in years against Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine.

Strengths
  • Neutralise or weaken a domain’s guaranteed hit.
Limits and weaknesses
  • Falling Blossom Emotion only weakened Malevolent Shrine, because the domain’s output was so high.
