Reverse Cursed Technique is the reason some Jujutsu Kaisen sorcerers can recover from injuries that should end a fight. It is not a second kind of ordinary cursed energy, and it is not the same move as Gojo's Cursed Technique Reversal: Red. The distinction matters because healing, powering a reversed technique and exorcising a curse all involve positive energy in different ways.
The short explanation: a skilled sorcerer uses cursed energy to produce positive energy, then directs that energy to repair a living body. Learning to do this is exceptionally difficult. Using it on somebody else is rarer still. The anime introduces the idea through Gojo, Shoko and Yuta, while later manga battles show how much the details matter.
Spoiler note: this guide discusses Gojo's past arc, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and a few clearly labelled Culling Game manga examples. It avoids the outcome of the manga's final battle.
What is Reverse Cursed Technique in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Most jujutsu techniques are powered by cursed energy, which arises from negative human emotions. Reverse Cursed Technique, commonly shortened to RCT, converts that negative energy into positive energy. That output can restore damaged flesh and help a sorcerer survive serious wounds. The phrase sounds like a curse being reversed, but the crucial result is the creation and use of positive energy.
Gojo describes the principle in mathematical terms: a negative multiplied by another negative becomes positive. This is a fictional energy rule, not a real medical or physics equation. It explains why a sorcerer cannot simply pour their usual cursed energy into a wound and expect it to close. For the foundations of that distinction, read our cursed energy guide.
The practical difference is simple. Cursed energy fuels attacks, reinforcement and innate techniques. Positive energy produced through RCT can heal living people. Mastering one does not automatically mean mastering the other. A fighter can have formidable cursed energy control yet struggle to understand the reversed process.
How does Reverse Cursed Technique heal injuries?
The series treats RCT as a demanding form of energy manipulation. A capable user generates positive energy and applies it to injured tissue. Depending on the user's output and control, this can close cuts, repair organs or regenerate more severe damage. Healing speed is not identical across users, and neither is the amount of energy they can spend before becoming exhausted.
It is useful to think of three separate questions: can the sorcerer generate positive energy at all, can they direct it accurately to an injury, and can they sustain enough output to repair the damage in time? Those are not interchangeable skills. A sorcerer who can patch up a manageable wound may not be able to undo a devastating attack.
RCT also has a demanding relationship with the brain. The manga makes clear that directing reversed energy involves brain function, which is one reason catastrophic head injuries can be especially dangerous. That does not mean every blow to the head instantly cancels healing; it means the technique has physical and technical vulnerabilities rather than functioning as unlimited regeneration.
How did Gojo learn Reverse Cursed Technique?
The clearest early demonstration happens during the Hidden Inventory story. Toji Fushiguro exploits Gojo's exhaustion, defeats him and leaves him close to death. Gojo survives by finally grasping the use of reversed energy, then returns to confront Toji with a much more complete understanding of Limitless. Crunchyroll's official season-two recap explicitly describes this turning point.
This scene matters because Gojo was already extraordinarily gifted before the encounter. His breakthrough is not evidence that every strong sorcerer can heal instinctively. It shows how rare and difficult RCT remains even for someone with the Six Eyes. His perceptive Six Eyes and inherited Limitless technique are also distinct abilities, not alternate names for RCT.
Later, Gojo's use of reversed energy helps him manage the strain of maintaining his abilities. That ongoing application is different from merely healing a visible cut. It also explains why the training and control behind RCT are as important to his strength as the more spectacular attacks audiences remember.
Is Reverse Cursed Technique the same as Gojo's Red?
No. This is the most common source of confusion. Reverse Cursed Technique produces positive energy. Cursed Technique Reversal uses that positive energy to power an innate technique in a way that reverses its normal effect. Gojo's Blue attracts, while his Cursed Technique Reversal: Red repels. Red is therefore an application of reversed energy, not another name for the healing process.
Hollow Purple is a separate combination involving Blue and Red. It should not be described as a healing move, and it is not the same thing as Unlimited Void. The distinction is especially important when comparing characters: knowing how to heal yourself does not prove you can reverse the behavior of an unrelated innate technique.
Who can use Reverse Cursed Technique?
Satoru Gojo is the most famous early example because his awakening is shown so dramatically. Shoko Ieiri, the physician associated with Jujutsu High, is important for a different reason: she can treat other people. Her skill makes her indispensable to the school even though she is not presented as a front-line fighter on Gojo's level.
Yuta Okkotsu demonstrates another rare version in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. After his friends are injured during the conflict with Geto, he is able to direct healing energy toward them. This is not just proof that Yuta has an enormous reserve of cursed energy. It shows a specific talent for producing and applying positive energy to others.
Ryomen Sukuna also demonstrates powerful regeneration, including when he repairs Yuji's body earlier in the story. The fact that Sukuna can heal serious damage does not make his methods morally equivalent to Shoko's medical work. RCT is an ability; its user's goals determine what that ability is used for.
Later manga material expands the list of users and explores specialized cases. Kinji Hakari, for example, benefits from extraordinary automatic healing during his jackpot state. That is an unusual interaction with his own technique, not a general rule that any RCT user can regenerate without thinking or paying a cost.
Why can some sorcerers heal others but Gojo usually cannot?
Producing positive energy for your own body and outputting it effectively into someone else's body are different accomplishments. Shoko and Yuta are notable because they can provide external healing. Gojo's personal mastery does not mean he has demonstrated the same reliable ability to heal another person. Raw power alone cannot substitute for the specific control that external treatment demands.
That difference also helps explain the role of support sorcerers. A healer can change the outcome of a mission without possessing the strongest offensive cursed technique. In a series where injury has lasting consequences, the ability to save another fighter is strategically important even when it receives less attention than a Domain Expansion.
Can Reverse Cursed Technique bring someone back from the dead?
It is not a universal resurrection spell. The series depicts characters surviving extreme injuries through timely healing, but those examples should not be taken as proof that any death can be reversed. The condition of the body, the severity of the damage, the user's remaining energy and the speed of intervention all matter.
Poison, damage involving the soul and certain other unusual attacks present additional complications. The manga treats these as difficult cases rather than automatic successes. RCT also does not simply undo every consequence of a fight, restore an exhausted technique without special risks, or guarantee that a wounded sorcerer will survive long enough to recover.
Why does positive energy affect cursed spirits differently?
Cursed spirits are composed of cursed energy, so their relationship to damage and recovery differs from that of human sorcerers. Positive energy can be dangerous to them. This helps explain why the same broad energy principle can be associated with healing a human and harming a curse. The target's nature changes the result.
That is also why calling RCT just 'healing magic' is misleading. Healing is its best-known use, but the underlying idea is energy conversion. What a character can accomplish depends on their ability to produce, control and output that energy in a particular situation.
How does RCT relate to Domain Expansion and technique burnout?
After using Domain Expansion, a sorcerer's innate technique can temporarily become difficult or impossible to use. RCT normally repairs physical injuries, not the underlying problem of technique burnout. Later battles introduce exceptional, dangerous attempts to restore technique function by damaging and healing the part of the brain involved. Those attempts carry serious consequences.
This distinction matters when reading dramatic battle sequences. A character healing a wound does not automatically mean their domain is ready again. For the mechanics of barriers, sure-hit effects and burnout, see our Domain Expansion explainer.
Gojo's confrontation with Toji is another useful comparison. Toji's physical advantages come from Heavenly Restriction, not RCT. A character can be exceptionally difficult to kill without possessing regenerative positive energy. Our Heavenly Restriction guide explains that separate trade-off.
The easiest way to remember the difference
Cursed energy is the usual fuel. Reverse Cursed Technique is the difficult process that produces positive energy. Healing is the best-known result. Cursed Technique Reversal uses that positive energy to change how a particular innate technique behaves, as Gojo does with Red. Domain Expansion is another category of jujutsu altogether.
Keeping those ideas separate makes Jujutsu Kaisen's power system much easier to follow. It also gives Shoko, Yuta and Gojo distinct roles instead of treating every powerful character as a sorcerer who can automatically heal anything. RCT makes impossible-looking recoveries plausible inside the story, but it never removes the importance of limits, timing and skill.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What is Reverse Cursed Technique in Jujutsu Kaisen?
It is an advanced process that converts cursed energy into positive energy, most commonly used to heal living bodies.
Why can Gojo use Red with Reverse Cursed Technique?
RCT supplies positive energy. Applying that energy to Limitless reverses its usual attractive effect, producing Cursed Technique Reversal: Red.
Can Gojo heal other people?
Gojo is highly proficient at healing himself, but the story does not establish that he can reliably output healing energy into others the way Shoko and Yuta can.
Can Reverse Cursed Technique revive anyone?
No. Healing severe wounds does not establish that the technique can reverse any death or restore every type of damage.
Why can Yuta and Shoko heal other people?
They possess the rare ability to output positive energy externally, which is distinct from using it to repair their own bodies.
