Kenjaku is the ancient sorcerer secretly controlling Suguru Geto's body in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is not Geto brought back to life. Through a technique that allows him to inhabit different hosts, Kenjaku has spent centuries preparing a plan that involves Satoru Gojo, the Culling Game and Master Tengen. His goal is not simply to win battles: he wants to force an unprecedented transformation of humanity through cursed energy.
Spoiler warning: This article reveals major events from Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Seasons 2 and 3, and includes a separately labeled manga-only family revelation. Readers who have not finished the Shibuya Incident should expect significant spoilers.
Who is Kenjaku, and why does he look like Geto?
Kenjaku is a human curse user who has lived for hundreds of years by transferring his brain between bodies. When he takes a new host, he can use abilities associated with that body. His current appearance is Suguru Geto's because Kenjaku obtained Geto's body after his death. The distinctive stitches across his forehead are a clue to the body-transfer technique.
Before his identity was revealed, viewers commonly called him Fake Geto or Pseudo-Geto. These are nicknames for the same person, not separate characters. The Crunchyroll Season 3 recap identifies the being occupying Geto's body as Kenjaku, and explains how his plans lead to the Culling Game.
Is Suguru Geto really dead?
Yes. The original Geto was Gojo's former friend, a talented sorcerer whose beliefs became extreme. In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Yuta Okkotsu defeated him, and Gojo later killed him. Kenjaku subsequently took possession of the body. Geto's personality and original motivations should not be confused with the ancient sorcerer now using his face.
Geto believed he could eliminate the source of curses by creating a world without non-sorcerers. Kenjaku instead treats humanity and cursed energy as material for an experiment. That difference explains why the same face appears attached to very different ambitions. Our Geto character analysis covers the tragedy behind the original character's choices.
How does Kenjaku's cursed technique work?
His signature technique allows him to change hosts through a brain transfer, extending his life and granting access to useful abilities. Geto's Cursed Spirit Manipulation is particularly valuable: it lets the host command spirits that have been subdued. Kenjaku can therefore employ Geto's technique as part of plans that Geto himself never conceived.
Cursed energy is the fuel behind jujutsu, while individual cursed techniques determine what a sorcerer can do. Kenjaku's body transfer, Geto's spirit manipulation and Mahito's Idle Transfiguration are distinct abilities. For readers unfamiliar with the system, our cursed energy guide explains the basic difference.
Why did Kenjaku need Geto's body to seal Gojo?
Geto's appearance helped Kenjaku exploit Gojo's memories. During the Shibuya Incident, Gojo was forced into a dangerous situation involving civilians and powerful enemies. Seeing the face of his supposedly dead best friend created the opening needed to activate the Prison Realm. Kenjaku did not defeat Gojo in a straightforward contest of strength; he used planning and psychological shock.
The strategy served a wider objective. Gojo's power and Six Eyes made him a formidable obstacle to Kenjaku's experiments. Once Gojo was sealed, the jujutsu world's strongest immediate defense was gone. Our Gojo sealing explainer describes how the trap worked.
What was Kenjaku's connection to Noritoshi Kamo?
Long before the events of the main story, Kenjaku occupied the body of the historical Noritoshi Kamo, a notorious figure linked to the creation of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. This person should not be confused with the Kyoto Jujutsu High student who has the same name. The connection explains why Choso reacts so strongly when he recognizes who is inhabiting Geto's body.
Choso and his brothers were affected by the historical experiments, making Kenjaku part of their origins. The official VIZ description of Volume 16 directly references Choso recognizing the sorcerer possessing Geto. His anger is personal, not merely an alliance against a powerful enemy.
Why did Kenjaku absorb Mahito?
Mahito's Idle Transfiguration can alter souls and bodies. After Mahito was defeated in Shibuya, Kenjaku used Geto's Cursed Spirit Manipulation to absorb him and gain access to the technique. He then applied it to people he had prepared in advance, awakening new sorcerers and creating suitable vessels for sorcerers from earlier eras.
This reveals that the Shibuya Incident was only one phase of a much larger operation. Kenjaku needed Gojo removed and Mahito's power available before his next experiment could begin. What seemed like a conflict between students and curses became a nationwide threat.
What does Kenjaku want from the Culling Game?
The Culling Game is a ritual organized around combat inside designated colonies. Existing sorcerers, newly awakened participants and incarnated sorcerers are drawn into a deadly competition. Players earn points and may use them to propose rules, but the purpose is not to reward a winner. The colonies and fighting prepare cursed energy for Kenjaku's intended merger involving Master Tengen.
Tengen maintains vital barriers and has evolved beyond an ordinary human state. Kenjaku wants to use that condition to force humanity in Japan into a radically different form. The consequences could extend far beyond the participants. Crunchyroll's Culling Game guide lays out the rules and explains how the colonies support the larger ritual.
Kenjaku's motivation is especially unsettling because curiosity matters more to him than human welfare. He wants to discover what might emerge from a transformation on an unimaginable scale. He is not pursuing Geto's original ideology, nor is he simply collecting powerful allies. The Culling Game is a mechanism for changing the conditions of the entire jujutsu world.
Why must Yuji and the others participate?
The game's rules make avoidance difficult. Certain participants must enter a colony within a deadline, and failure to change points can carry severe consequences. People who enter colonies can also become participants. Yuji and his allies hope to earn enough points to create rules that protect unwilling players, while searching for Angel, whose technique could help release Gojo.
The ritual's restrictions and binding vows are crucial: the heroes cannot simply announce that the competition is over. They must find ways to change its operation while Kenjaku's larger plan advances.
Is Kenjaku serving Sukuna?
Kenjaku and Sukuna have connections through arrangements reaching into the past, but they have different priorities. Sukuna is a terrifying individual force, while Kenjaku pursues a long-term experiment involving barriers, vessels and human evolution. It would be misleading to describe Kenjaku as merely Sukuna's assistant. Their interests sometimes intersect without becoming the same goal.
How much has the anime revealed?
Season 3 explains Kenjaku's identity, the Culling Game's rules and the threat to Tengen. The manga continues beyond those revelations. Season 4 was announced in March 2026 as Culling Game Part 2, without a confirmed release date in that announcement. Our Season 4 status page covers that separate anime update.
Manga spoilers: Is Kenjaku related to Yuji?
Major manga spoiler: Kenjaku previously occupied Kaori Itadori's body and was involved in Yuji Itadori's birth. This makes the connection between the protagonist and the ancient sorcerer much more direct than the anime's initial revelations suggest. It also adds another layer to the relationships involving Choso and the Death Paintings. Anime-only viewers can understand Kenjaku's Culling Game plan without knowing this twist.
